YOUTHFUL 1864'S BRAVE DISPLAY AGAINST HAYDON BRIDGE.

West Tyne League Division 1: Sat 24th August 2024.

SNCC 1864 111ao (28.1o) Aaryan Wagh 15, Olly Alexander 15, Varun Gudipati 10, Simon West 12, Stephen Harper 24*: Jamie Taylor 3-12, Liam Stephenson 1-19, Neil Kendrew 4-25, Dale Leadbitter 1-23, Gavin Boyd 1-21.

Haydon Bridge won by 41 runs - 20 points, SNCC 1864 - 6.

A youthful 1864 side, featuring four under13's & two under15's, put up a most creditable display against second placed Haydon Bridge. The hosts were invited to bat & after 12 overs of controlled seam bowling from U15's Varun (6-2-7-0) & Joe (6-3-4-3) on a helpful wicket, their total was 12-3, outstanding !! Two catches for w/k Aaryan Wagh, one a very good effort, diving forward & one for Simon West at cover from a top edged pull.

Taylor & Leadbitter then put together a partnership of over 90 for the 4th wicket in which chances were given by Taylor but not taken. Simon & David had spells & Archit had begun to twirl his leg breaks but it was Leo Harper who saw the hard-hitting Leadbitter's (53) downfall courtesy of an outstanding catch by father Steve, racing in from deep mid wicket & diving to take a low, left-handed catch inches above the turf. A true champagne moment, 'the best catch he has ever taken'...& not pushed around the post as in a former life !

Taylor (44) succumbed lbw to Archit, Boyd (0) was bowled by Leo, Sim (7) & Tulip (4) by Olly Alexander, full & straight. O Boyd (5) was very well caught low by Elliott Mee at first slip off Chris Dresser, but Liddle (13*) & Stephenson (3*) saw the total to 152-9 after the 40 overs. Nine bowlers used to offer experience to younger players in a game that would not affect final league positions.

There was a little in the wicket & the ball nibbled about as Joe Dresser & Aaryan Wagh faced the seam of Taylor &Stephenson. Joe (4) was bowled by Taylor, then Aaryan & Olly put together a partnership of 25 before Olly (15) was bowled by Stephenson. Aaryan (15) followed, chipping back to bowler Leadbitter.

Varun & Simon battled but Varun (10) fell to Kendrew's off spin as did Simon (12) bowled through the gate. Elliott (7) glanced down the legside but was caught  by w/k Cunningham off G Boyd. 80-6 as Steve Harper entered to provide some resistance. Urging his batting partners to play forward to off spinner Kendrew, pulling & driving, he hit 6 x4 & 2x2, but Archit (2) was c&b by Kendrew, Chris D (0) caught by Cunningham off the returning Taylor & David (0) lbw to the same bowler.

A spirited effort saw the 1864's 111 all out after 28.1 overs, a good experience for young players who rose to the occasion.

The season ends with the 1864's in third position on 204 points. The top 4 teams, Riding Mill, Haydon Bridge, Wylam & SNCC  will now play a round robin mini league to fill in the available dates in what is to be the last season of the West Tyne League as we know it.

May they continue to provide opportunities for young players to show what they can do.

Duncan.
