The ground at Haydon Bridge has no covers so it was no surprise that the pitch was damp to the touch for the second match of the season.
The home side won the toss and asked the 1864s to bat first. Wickets fell regularly and Ryan Sidney-Wilmot (33) and Alan Fletcher (17) were the only batsmen to get double figures. Extras with 19 were in fact second top scorer!! The cause was not helped by 3 run outs. The 1864s were 90 all out in 31.2 overs.
Haydon Bridge appeared confident during the tea interval and set off quickly chasing 91 to win. As with the 1864s innings wickets fell regularly. Joe Barber, opening bat, looked capable of winning the match on his own but eventually fell for 41 to a good catch by Ryan Sidney-Wilmot off the bowling of Will Varley. Wickets for David Harbottle (2) and Gaurang Dhillon (2) brought the 1864s back into the match. Excellent spells from David Cragg (1 for 14 in 8 overs) and Ryan Sidney-Wilmot (3 for 9 in 7.2 overs) made for an interesting end to the game. With their last pair at the wicket Haydon Bridge needed 5 to win. That became 4, then 3 until the scores were tied. With the second ball of his 8th over Ryan S-W forced an edge and the number 11 batsman was well caught at slip by skipper David Harbottle. Match tied.
A good bowling performance by the 1864s but more runs are desperately needed!! Well done to Will Varley (under 15) who came on to bowl a second spell with Haydon Bridge very close to victory. He held his nerve and can be very pleased with his performance.
Next game Saturday 5 May at home (Matfen) to Newton. Start 13.30
