Hetton Lyons win by 7 wickets -  24 points, SNCC 1.

An out of sorts Bulls were well beaten by league leaders Hetton Lyons on a day when the batting again failed to fire seemingly abetted by some rather idiosyncratic umpiring decisions. Choosing to bat Ru (0) was adjudged caught behind off a pad in over 1 Moulder the bowler. David Edwards (12 ) was yorked in over 8 & Charners (8) edging behind 2 balls later, both to Adey, 25-3.

Angus (6) in prime form but at 39 pushing forward to leg spinner Burdon was adjudged lbw. A handy partnership of 35 between Alex Weetman & Will Alexander ended at 74 when Alex (26, 37b 2x4 1x6)) drove Dixon to mid off. Will battled but then at 81 Ben Sid (3) was adjudged lbw when the ball seemed destined for the leg side. Will's (20, 62b 1x4) resistance ended at 82 when Moulder got one to turn sharply, 7 down.

Gavin provided some more resistance but at 104 Lunny (6, 33b) pulled Moulder to mid wicket. At 114 George (4) dragged on to Moulder & Missy (0) was bowled by Khan leaving Gavin 23* (33b, 1x4, 1x6). Not enough !

The Lyons took their time aided by 17 wides ! The openers Birbeck each batted for 70+ balls. Several bowling changes eventually saw Lunny persuade A Birbeck to drive to mid off where Alex W took the catch. At 68 Marchant (9) pushing forward was lbw to Lunny & at 81, M Birbeck 36 (75b 5x4) was very well caught & bowled by Lunny off a firm drive, low down on his follow through.

Lowther 38* & Tomys 7* saw the Lyons home in the 36th over. The Bulls slip to 9th in Division 2 on 207 points. Gateshead Fell are 19th on 170.  5 weeks ago the Bulls were second. Availability has been problematic but we are better than this!

Onward to Sat 24th August SNCC v Tynemouth (h) 90o win/lose from 1200. We hope you can be there.

This lack lustre display may have had a galvanising effect for 24 hours later the Bulls won the NEPL T20 competition defeating Castle Eden & Sunderland emphatically !!

                                                BULLS TRIUMPH IN NEPL T20

Sun 18th Aug 2024: NEPL T20 Finals Day at Castle Eden.

SNCC v Castle Eden (1st semi final)

SNCC 146-7 (20o) Alex Weetman 36, Angus Southern 45, Gavin Paton 45: Richard Ede 2-21, Jacob Darby 2-17, Ash Grant 0-22, Will Iceton 1-22, Lewis Simpson 1-15, Chris Tudball 1-42.

Castle Eden 90ao (13.3o) Martin Dunn 35, Liam Irwin 28, Chris Tudball 11: Gavin Paton 0-11, Ru Fletcher 1-28, George Gray 1-18, Gregor Pearce 4-22, Missy Banks 4-9.

SNCC won by 56 runs.

The hosts chose to field, at 14-3 after 14 balls this seemed a good decision. Ru (4) edging behind, David (1) lbw to one that kept low & Charners (0) caught on the crease succumbed to Ede & Darby. The surface seemed a tad uneven so shot making was not entirely without risk.

Despite this, an excellent partnership of 78 between Alex W & Angus rescued the innings. Surviving a chance to deep square leg, Angus was at his most positive, driving through the offside & lifting over mid wicket, well supported by Alex who hit one enormous 6 to mid wicket.

At 84 Angus (45, 37b, 6x4 1x6 to long off) advanced to the sla of Simpson & was stumped. Enter Gavin who demonstrated again his powerful range of shots, taking 4, then 6+4 in overs 15 &16. In over 18 Alex (36, 3x4 1x6)  advanced to Ede & was bowled. Jacob (2) was stumped attacking which left Gavin to hit 4 in the 19th then 6,6,4 in Tudball's last, 45 (22b 5x4 3x6) caught off the last ball of the innings, the 6 over extra cover was special ! A par score.

Castle Eden set off quickly Dunn taking 3x4 off Ru's first & 6x4 in the first 5 overs meant 44 but revenge for Ru at 47 as Dunn (35), who had a life, hit a low full toss to mid wicket where Charners obliged. One run later George bowled Brown (0). In the next over Spellman (0) lunged but was lbw to Gregor, 50-3.

Tudball (11) took 2x4 off George in the 8th but in the next he hit Gregor to Alex at long on who jumped to take an outstanding catch & prevent a 6 ! Irwin hit 6 + 4 but Gregor was bowling well & Simpson (7) was lbw on the crease in the 11th.

Missy, bowling straight on a good length, then took 4 wickets in 2.3 overs. Irwin (28) was lbw, 87-6; K Iceton (1) was very well caught by Ben Sid standing up. Will Iceton (0) was bemused by a Gregor googly & bowled, Ede (2) was caught by Charners at deep cover & Darby (0) bowled. 90 all out in only 13.3 overs.

Outstanding bowling by Gregor & Missy with 4 wickets each well supported by George & some good catching.

NEPL BANKS T20 FINAL SNCC V SUNDERLAND.

ANGUS SOUTHERN  STARS IN EMPHATIC WIN.

SNCC 147-5 (20o) Ru Fletcher 44, Angus Southern 73* Gavin Paton 14: Yaqoob 0-31, Coates 2-26, Indrarajah 1-30, Pritchard 2-23, Cooney 0-21, Kamathan 0-14.

Sunderland 104-7 (20o) Nunn 24, Pritchard 20, Kamathan 11: Gavin Paton 1-20, George Gray 1-28, Ru Fletcher 1-20, Gregor Pearce 2-13, Missy Banks 2-17.

SNCC won by 43 runs.

The Bulls chose to bat. Sunderland entered after a rather tetchy encounter with Burnmoor during which 4 level 2 warnings were issued. A tough start as Alex C (1) was bowled by Indrarajah in the third over, David's (2) call for a single led to him being run out & Alex W (7) played on to Pritchard's leg spin in the 7th, 29-3.

Then Ru & especially Angus fashioned a decisive partnership of 90 for  the 4th wicket. Angus stroking through the offside & over mid wicket & Ru sweeping the spinners & driving straight. Angus's straight 6 seemed effortless. At 119 in the 15th Ru (44, 33b, 5x4 1x6) was out but Angus continued in company with Gavin (14) who was out in the 18th at 135. Jacob (4) was with Angus at the end, a magnificent 73* (43b, 9x4 2x6), 147-5 defendable!

Sunderland set off well, Pritchard attacked & George suffered but in the third at 27 Pritchard (20) was caught by Ru at cover off Gavin. Missy entered the attack & Potts (6) was held by Ru at long on, 48-2 in the 10th. 54-3 in the 12th when Cooney(1) was caught by Alex W off George at long on & 4 runs later Nunn (24) was very well held above his head at cover by David off Gregor, 4 down.

Indrarajan (0) was bowled by Gregor at the same score. A partnership of 27 but then Kamathan (11) was bowled by Missy, 85-6 in the 17th. Arulthas (5) was well caught & bowled by Ru in the 18th & although Yaqoob (21) & Cooney (5) were undefeated the cause was gone, the Bulls winning by 43 runs.

An outstanding come back after the display at Hetton Lyons the day before & a second cup triumph for the 2's after the Roseworth Trophy win in May. Angus Southern was most deservedly 'Player of the Day' for his 45 & 73* but in a very good team effort the bowling of Gregor & Missy stood out well supported by Ru, George & Gavin & some very good catching.

Now can we please win some league matches !!.

Duncan.
