NEWCASTLE MAKE FAST START: ACADEMY PULL I T BACK BUT RAIN INTERVENES.

NEPL Sunday First Division: 16th June 2024: SNNCC v Newcastle (a)     40/40

Newcastle 228-8 (40o) W Abbas 82, E Elphick 57, W Hall 19, M Johnson 13*: Joe Dresser 0-34, Will Young 0-32, Gregor Pearce 1-36, Varun Gudipati 0-41, George Gray 1-2, Olivia Miller 2-41, Jaques Graham 3-26.

Match abandoned after one innings: SNCC 12 points, Newcastle 13.

A tale of two halves as Newcastle won the toss & chose to bat. Amin & Abbas faced the right arm seam of Joe Dresser & Will Young. The loss of Amin (8) from the second ball of the second over, skied to George McConnell at mid wicket off Will Young, set the scene for Abbas (82, 15x4 1x6) to show some invention, hitting to all parts, drives, scoops & some flying over the close field as Will, Varun, Gregor & Joe all suffered if length was awry.

Two chances to dismiss Abbas went begging but in company with E Elphick the total had reached 132 in only the 18th when Abbas swept George Gray to 45 where Varun took the catch. Greater intensity in the field ensued, only 37 being scored between overs 21 & 30 as Gregor (lb/g) & Liv Miller (lb) spun the ball.

Hall (19) was bowled by a Gregor googly in over 29. In over 32, Safi (7) missed a full toss to be bowled by LIv, 185-4. Jaques (sla) entered the attack & in over 33 E Elphick (57, 81b, 8x4) was well caught by Will Young moving in smartly at mid-on off Jacques.

10 runs & two overs later Moudhgalya (9) aiming to cut, was caught at short third man by Jacques off Liv, 199-6. In over 37 Gibson (7) mistimed to mid wicket off Jacques where Joe took the catch. In the penultimate over Piackard (9) was bowled by Jacques. Johnson (13*) scampered & at the end of 40 overs, the total had risen to 228-8.

After last week's triumph against the same opponents, chasing this total  would have been a challenge to relish with a short leg side boundary.

Sadly, rain intervened which prevented the SNCC innings from beginning.

12 points leaves the Academy on 102, second in the table to Sacriston  with a game in hand.

Onward to Sun 30th June SNCC Academy v Gateshead Fell (a), we hope you can be there to cheer the team on.

Duncan.
