GALLANT EFFORT BY 1864'S IN 4 WICKET DEFEAT AT WYLAM.

West Tyne League Division 1: Sat 27th April 2024

SNCC 1864 73-8 (26.2 o) Finlay Pearce 23, Gregor Pearce 17; Lewis Neesham 2-11, Jeff White 2-14, James Cantrell 1-11, Marcus Wells 1-29.

Wylam 76-6 (24o) Neil Wells 25, David Teasdale 19, Chris Japes 9*, James Cantrell 9*: Finlay Pearce 0-16, Will Carr 0-12. Gregor Pearce 2-19, David Cragg 2-5, Jacques Graham 1-7, Archit Upadhye 1-14.

Wylam won by 4 wickets - 20 points, SNCC 1864 - 3.

Exam prep, hols & Toon home game distractions meant only 9 were available to go to Wylam in the first game of the season in West Tyne League Div 1. In Patrick's absence, Gregor skippered.

Ground conditions were better than expected after all the recent rain. A slow outfield & some inconsistent bounce meant playing back was risky.

The 1864's were asked to bat. Belinda Wewalage & Will Carr faced the rm seam of Neesham & the slower White. Belinda (2) missed a straight one from Neesham to be lbw & Arif (0) back, played on to the same bowler, 5-2. This became 6-3 as Will Carr (4) was adjudged to be stumped off White.

Finlay Pearce & Jacques Graham took the score to 20 when Jacques (3) played early to White who took the c & b. The brothers Pearce, running well, then fashioned a partnership of 33 before Finlay (23, 63b) just failed to get back for two, beaten by a good throw from fine leg, 53-5.

Jack Patterson (2) was bowled by Cantrell at 61 & two runs later Gregor (17, 25b) played on as the ball kept low from Marcus Wells, 63-7. Archit Upadhye (5*) & David Cragg (4) put on 10, a boundary each, before David was run out with score at 76-8.

In reply Neil Wells & David Teasdale faced the left arm medium of Finlay Pearce & rm of Will Carr. Carrying some fortune, the home side were 25- 0 after 9 overs before the introduction of spin. Gregor (lb/g) & David Cragg (sla) bowled in tandem & it appeared that the batsmen could not read the turn, which had not been evident in the first innings.

Teasdale (19) was lbw to David in the 15th, 49-1. There followed a wicket in each of  the next 5 overs for only 8 runs with 3 maidens. N Wells (25) driving Gregor, was very well caught by a retreating Will Carr, one handed, over his head at mid off, 51-2.

At the same score Porter (0) drove David Cragg to mid wicket where Will took another safe catch, 51-3. 54-4 as the tall Wilson (3) was bowled, bemused by a Gregor googly. In the 19th over Jacques, who bowled nicely, caught & bowled Neesham above his head in follow through, 54- 5. In over 20 Barnett (1) was well caught by Finlay at short mid wicket off Archit's leg breaks, 57-6.

However, Japes (9*) & Cantrell (9*) saw the home side over the line after 24 overs.

A creditable performance by the nine who now turn their attention to a home game v Belsay on Sat 4th May. We hope you may be able to support them.

Duncan.
