The opening fixture of the 2022 NEPL Premier Division season saw SN visit a damp Burnopfield. Injury to captain Adam Cragg & the absence of Tshepang Dithole gave opportunities to Parth Mannikar & a debut for Angus Southern. Sean Tindale skippered.
Birty & Sol opened against the seam of Oswell M & Killeen M. Birty was going well when in completing a second run in the 10 th over at 42-0, he badly twisted an ankle & had to retire on 25 (28b). Ankle ligament damage was confirmed at hospital. Theo Brophy-Clews dashed from Gosforth to substitute. Chris Hewison & Sol had progressed to 61 when Sol fended one that popped off Carse, gloving behind for 24.
Rob Peyton joined Hewi & the pair progressed steadily to 115 in the 34th, when Rob (23) drove Killeen M to cover,. There followed a magnificent partnership of 104 in 15 overs between Hewi & Sean, which ended in the 49th over, when in returning for a second, Hewi was run out for a splendid 97 (101b, 5x4,5x6). A maximum next ball to Sean but he was caught in the deep for 41 (46b, 2x4, 2x6) from the last ball of the 49th.
Over 50 saw three wickets go down, McGee(1), Southern(0) & Wightman (0), in the last 4 balls, all to M Oswell.
The Burnopfield innings was dominated by English Lion & DCCC all rounder, Brydon Carse who seemed to be playing at a different level. His 127* (131b, 9x4, 7x6), a masterclass of power batting. It had begun promisingly for the Bulls, J Oswell, driving, was bowled by Sean, 17-1 in the 4th. Appelby, likewise, was bowled by Jonny, 39-2 in the 9th. Carse showed his intent taking 11 off Lee's second over. Seymour, driving, was caught & bowled Lee at 76 in the 18th, up with the rate.
Oli bowled a fine spell taking it away from the right handers but it was Jonny who bowled Killeen, defending, at 125-4 in the 30th. In the 34 th M Oswell was caught by Cal at mid on off Oli. Carse then took Lee for 17 in the 35th. Callum Brown was caught by Sean off Oli in the 38th.
Carse & Radcliffe (22*) then batted with good sense & built a match winning partnership of 81, Carse took 3x4 off Jonny in the 47th & won the game with a boundary from the first ball of the last over. For an England Lions fast bowler, Brydon Carse bats very well !!
The Bulls are away at Jesmond v Newcastle on Sat 23rd April, looking to bounce back.
