An emphatic start to the NTCL Midweek Open League 2025 season for the Bulls as Bates were restricted to 79 -5 in their 16 overs & then openers Tom Seymour 32* & Will Oliver 45* completed the 10 wicket win after 12.2 overs without being parted.
Bates chose to bat on a sunny evening in Seaton Delaval. Merryweather & Wagh faced the seam of Joe Dresser (rm) & George McConnell (lm). A wicket for Joe in the first over as Merryweather (0) drove to cover where Leo Harper took a neat catch.
10-2 in the 3rd when Wagh (1) was wonderfully caught, one handed, by Will Oliver on the deep square leg boundary off Joe. A good spell of left arm seam from George, 0-9 in his 4 overs. Elliott & Peacock made amends & the total had reached 55 in the 12th when Elliott (32) drove Matt Williams to mid off for George to take the catch.
A repeat in over 14 when Allan (3) drove Williams towards deep mid off for George to pouch another, 67-4. Chasing runs in the 16th Peacock (16) attempting to return for a 2nd run, failed to beat Danny Collins throw to the bowler. Khan pushed on to finish 16*. & the total reached 79-5 at the close.
Tom Seymour & Will Oliver faced the seam of Jordan & sla of Dagless. The variable length of the bowlers was severely punished as both found the boundary on both sides of the wicket with regularity. Change bowlers Symington (sla) Merryweather (lb) suffered too.
The end came in the 13th with Tom 32* (34b, 2x4, 1x6) & Will 45* (40b 6x4 1x6). A good start, one senses tougher challenges to come.
