                   NEPL Sunday Division 1, 17th July 2022, SN v Hetton Lyons (a)

SNCC 157ao (38.2o) Sam Ewart 70, Oliver Clark 30, Jan Ozmen 23: Hayden Fenwick 6-37, Charlie Burdon 2-27, Taylor Moulder 2-24.

Hetton Lyons 158-4 (25o) Dan Walker 42, Jack Hedley 65*, Noah Worthy 14, Taylor Moulder 16: Ben Hobbs 1-28, Will Alexander 0-22, Gregor Pearce 1-33, George Gray 1-42, Jenny McDowell 1-31.

Hetton Lyons won by 6 wickets- 20 points, SNCC 5.

A tough day at hot & sunny Lilywhite Terrace with a short boundary to the Pavilion side. SN won the toss & chose to bat. Sam Ewart exploded in over 3 taking 15 off Fenwick who was replaced. Unfortunately, at 30, Sam 27*, suffered a blow to his right elbow & had to retire hurt.

Jan Ozmen joined Oliver Clark & the score advanced slowly, 50 -0 (11o), 62-0,(16o), 81-0 (20o) some singles but only 4 boundaries in 15 overs until at 88, Jan (23) was bowled by Burdon's leg spin. Both he & off spinner Moulder were turning the ball.

Aadesh (2) seeking to press on, perished at 91 in the 25th then Sam returned to continue his assault, 5 in the 26th, 13, including 2x6, in the 29th until at 115 in the 30th Oliver (30,97b) was bowled by Burdon followed soon by Gregor (0) bowled by Moulder, 115-4. Will Alexander (1) caught off a leading edge at cover, Fenwick the bowler, 121-5 in the 33rd of the 40 available.

Ewart's fine innings 70 (46b, 7x4,2x6) ended with a good catch on the mid wicket boundary at 140 in the 35th. Hobbs (8) was bowled by Fenwick 4 balls later, 140-7. Jenny (8) George (0) & finally Anya (2) were all bowled by Fenwick (6-37) leaving Michael Maclauchlan 0*, 157 all out in the 39th. A sense of too few runs.

Worthy & Walker faced the seam of Hobbs & Alexander. A difficult 1st over for Ben , 11 including two wides & a no ball, was followed by a Will maiden. A difficult second for Will with 3x4. At 29 in the 5th Worthy (14) was bowled by Hobbs. Hedley joined Walker, 50-1 after 8 overs of seam. Then Gregor Pearce (lb) & George Gray (ob) bowled in tandem for 12 overs. Walker took 11 off Pearce in the 11th but succumbed to the same bowler two overs later, caught by Sam Ewart for 42, 76-2.

Hedley & Moulder pressed on, until Moulder (18) was caught by MacLauchlan off Gray at cover, in the 20th. Hedley accelerated, taking advantage of the short boundary, George & Jenny suffered, 5 off the 22nd, 11 off the 23rd, 7 off the 24th & although Tomys (9) was stumped by Ewart off McDowell in the 25th, 3x6 in that over sealed the win, 157-4 after 25 overs.

Against an 'older' side with county age group players, Sam's batting to commend & George's 8 overs, some good fielding & bowling, 2 chances not taken, but with a short boundary c 60 runs short of a competitive total. We must rotate.

The next Sunday Division 1 fixture is against Sunderland (h) on 24th July, we hope you can join us.
