A cautionary day for the 2's, as, weakened by absences to the 1's, they suffered a mauling at the hands of a strong Newcastle side, only Nick Tomlinson (24) at three & a stand of 51 for the 7th wicket between Sree Kanakala (34) & Sadiq Khan(19) offering the resistance required against a steady, right arm, seam attack & Joe Boaden's off breaks.
5-1, 19-2, 20-3, Angus Southern (1), Alex Charnley (1) & Mo Arabi (1), on debut, all bowled, two for Miller, one for Phillips. After 3 boundaries, Nick Tomlinson drove a catch to cover, 42-4, & one ball later, Sam Ewart was lbw, 42-5, both to Charlie Robinson. This became 46-6 when Ryan Sid (6) was caught, also off Robinson.
A decent partnership of 51 between Sadiq (19) & Sree, who played three or four lovely cover drives, ended at 97 when Sadiq, cutting, feathered behind off the slow left arm of Will Taylor. This became 108-8 when Sree was sent back, to be run out at the bowlers end for a commendable 34, A frustrating way to end a good innings at that stage of the game. Ben Hobbs (3) was bowled by Taylor, 116-9 & Will Harris followed at 120, bowled by Robinson, leaving Allan Davidson 6*, in a sorry total of 120.
The Newcastle innings began with 10 wides & a difficult, dropped catch from the first three balls. Struggling for consistency, variations of direction & length were punished unmercifully & all the bowlers suffered. 27 wides & 1 no ball didn't help, as Francis Collins (29* 4x4, 1x6) & Bobby Green (65* 11x4, 1x6), once of this parish, raced to the total required in only 15.4 overs.
We have serious work to do & must aim to bounce back at Gateshead Fell on Sat 30 th April. We are better than this!
