2'S 10 WICKET WIN AT FELLING.

PATON HAT TRICK THEN 167 OPENING PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN FLETCHER & CHARNLEY

              Sat 14th Sept 2024: NEPL Division 2: SNCC v Felling (a) 45/45, win/lose.

Felling 166 ao (34.5o) H Hemat 70, C Wright 33, K Gilmour 23, A Trotter 20*: Gavin Paton 3-49, Allan Davidson 1-40, James Lunn 2-40, George Gray 3-35.

SNCC 167-0 (24.5o) Ru Fletcher 74* Alex Charnley 59*: B Lowery 0-17, C Wright 0-18, G Cousins 0-22, R Newman 0-29, M Douglas 0-33, M Lowery 0-14, S Oraikhil 0-12, K Gilmour 0-9.

SNCC won by 10 wickets - 24 points, Felling 2.

The hosts chose to bat. Oraikhil & Hemat faced the seam of Paton & Davidson. An optimistic call for a second run by Oraikhil in the second over was defeated by an excellent throw from backward point by David Edwards, with Ben Sid completing the run out, 13-1.

Hemat was batting positively & in the company of Wright (33, 15b, 6x4) took the score to 60 in only the 8th over when Wright mistimed to square leg where Edwards took the catch. Going at 6's the total raced along until Gilmour (23) mistimed a sweep off George Gray & Edwards again took the chance at mid on, 135-3 in the 21st over.

Two overs later Hemat (70, 62b, 9x4,4x6) leading edged Gavin to cover where Edwards took his third catch, 142-4. Next ball Cousins (0) edged to w/k Ben Sid & the ball after that the left handed Nicholls (0) was bowled as Gav went round the wicket, 143-6. A hat trick for Gav who seems to enjoy playing against his former club !!

Tony Trotter (20*) resisted but Newman (1) was lbw to Gray working to leg at 148, Douglas (1) defending, was bowled by George 154-8. Lunny then picked up two wickets at 166 in the 35th M Lowery (4) top edged a pull to be caught by Ru mid wicket & brother B Lowery (0) was bowled sweeping.

The Bulls reply was emphatic & the opening partnership between Ru Fletcher & Alex Charnley was undefeated. 33 extras including 20 wides 8 bowlers used none with success as Ru 74* (69b, 12x4) & Alex 59* (80b, 9x4) punished some wayward bowling completing the win in only 24.5overs.

Congratulations to Ru (590) & Alex (617) who are NEPL Division 2 top run scorers in 2024. A 5th place finish on 306 points (won 10, lost 7) was a disappointing outcome after being second 7 weeks ago but 2023 Roseworth Trophy & NEPL T20 Cup success were to be applauded. Two more finals days to come.

Missing 7 regulars & affected by having to bowl in wet conditions, the 2's did not manage to post a competitive total which Whitburn coasted to with 32 balls to spare. A delayed start & the game was played with a drizzle ever present.

The home team chose to field. Somewhat controversially, Ru (0) was adjudged caught by w/k Abdy off the very first ball by Elliott. Nick Tomlinson (5) went at 23 yorked by Smith. Jacob McCord (15, 3x4) was caught at deep square leg off Jenkins at 27 (32b).

George McConnell (1) defending, was bowled by Hearn at 30 & Jan (5) working to leg, lbw to Shakespeare at 39 after 54 balls. Lunny struck 3x4 in an innings of 24 but at 69 (80b) he was bowled by Shakespeare, sweeping, At 72 Manchester (7) was lbw to Jenkins & although George (12) hit 1x4 1x6 he was bowled by Jenkins in the penultimate set. Gregor swung a six off Hearn in the last set to end the innings on 98.

Whitburn's reply seemed to contain a boundary an over except when Albie was bowling. He bowled the third & fourth sets for only 6 with the wicket of Smith lbw, 19-1. Missy, George G & Gregor suffered until Gregor very well c & b Abdy (19) at 41 in the 8th set. In the next Gregor bowled May (7) 50-3.

But 19 from  the next two sets as Missy & Lunny were driven, 69-3 after 50 balls. Jenkins (18) picked up Gregor to deep mid wicket where Missy held a good catch, 76-4. Quinan (9) swung & Markham (24*)  plundered 2x6 & it was left to Albie to bowl Quinan at 94, only for 4 byes to seal the win. Albie a creditable 2-6 from 13 balls.

Onward to James Bell Cup Finals day at Burnmoor on Sunday 22nd Sept. SN v Whitburn in the second semi final. We wish them well.

Duncan.
