1864'S THWARTED BY THE WEATHER AT RIDING MILL

22nd Aug 2022

West Tyne League Division 1, Sat 20th August, 1864 v Riding Mill (a)

SNCC 1864 152-8 (35.5o) Oliver Clark 14, Belinda Wewalage 39, Guy Johnson 15, Trudy Johnson 37, Josephine Nkomo 17: Tim Willis 0-17, Andy Watson 0-33, Kiel Zurawlew 0-15, Alan Fletcher 3-30, Mark Davison 1-33, Malik Afzal 4-8.

Riding Mill did not bat.

Match abandoned at 1715: SNCC 1864 - 9 points, Riding Mill 9.

A pity that Josephine's last game for the 1864's was rain curtailed. She has added greatly to the club during her short time with us, bowling with accuracy & coaching with a smile. Bolstered by her all round performances, the SNCC women's team are Division 1 league Champions again.

Riding Mill won the toss & invited the 1864's to bat on a dry surface. Clark & Wewalage faced the tall, rm of Willis & left arm in swing of Watson. An opening partnership of 67 between Oliver (14, 62b, 1x4) defending solidly against good bowling & the more flamboyant Belinda Wewalage (39, 40b, 5x4, 1x6) who took some risks but pushed the score along well was heartening; 12 byes assisted.

Change bowlers Zurawlew & Fletcher had entered the attack when Belinda, advancing to Alan Fletcher's off breaks, swung, missed & was stumped from a distance by w/k Kent.

One run later Oliver was adjudged lbw to a full delivery from Fletcher, 68-2. A partnership of 20 between brother Guy & sister Trudy Johnson, (is this a first for SNCC ?) ended at 87 when Guy (15,22b, 3x4) seemed unlucky to be given out caught down the legside off his pad.

Trudy & Josephine combined to good effect, Trudy driving straight, pulling anything short & finding the gaps, Josephine spotting the singles & rotating the strike. Despite a short rain break, the pair had put on 53 when Josephine (17, 2x4) aimed to cut the leg breaks/topspinners of Malik Afzal & was caught by w/k Kent, 140-4. The drizzle persisted but play continued.

One run later Trudy (37, 53b,6x4) advancing, aimed a big drive at Afzal & was bowled, a splendid innings, 141-5. Patrick (5, 5b) one nice boundary & then bowled, essaying a hit off the medium pace of Davison, 146-6. Simon (6, 3b), likewise, a huge slog swept 6 then, in attempting a repeat, skied to be caught at mid wicket, 146-6. Alan Roskilly (0, 4b) driving & bowled by Afzal, 152-8 in the 36th when the rain became heavier & the players left the field at 1600. Afzal 4-8, but another batting point achieved at 150.

The rain persisted & an abandonment was agreed at 1715, 9 points each. All WTL Division 1 fixtures suffered the same fate.

With 4 WTL Div 1 matches remaining, the 1864's remain in 6th place on 234 points. Sat 27th August Stamfordham (h), Sat 3rd Sept Hexham Leazes (a), Sat 10th Sept Haydon Bridge (h - Greenside) & Sat 17th Sept Haltwhistle (h -  South North) are to come, we hope you can be there.

Duncan.
