On a sunny day amid the holiday season each team fielded 10 players. The 1864's chose to bat. Patterson & Pearce faced the seam of J Garrett & W Moss.

5-1 as Finlay (1) got a good one from Garrett. A handy partnership of 40 between Jack & Jacques saw the score rise to 45 when Jacques (21, 31b,2x4) swung again on the leg side to be caught at deep mid wicket. Arif joined Jack P & the total rose nicely to 74 when Jack, who had driven nicely again through the off side, was bowled by Garrett-Jowsey for 35 (86b, 4x4).

A mini collapse followed as Arif (14) was lbw to Parker at the same score, Patrick (1) was bowled leaving & Belinda (0) bowled, 77-6 in the 27th & in a bit of a hole. On debut Will Oliver batted calmly & he & Albie built a partnership of 59, hitting the bad ball & running well which saw the total rise to 129 when Will (29, 32b, 4x4 1x6) was caught on the leg side off Garrett-Jowsey, 7 down in the 35th over.

Albie, who had hit the bad ball well through the offside & rotated nicely, & Tom Oliver raised the total to 152 in the 39th when Albie (42, 32b, 4x4 1x6) was run out. Tom was joined by Oliver Alexander on debut & the pair added 9 to ensure the 40 overs were batted, Tom 9* (15b 1x4) & Oliver 3*.

J Arnup & S Arnup faced McPate (rm) & Graham. J Arnup (1) drove Jacques to Finlay at mid on in the 2nd over, 3-1. In the 5th S Arnup (8) edged Albie to w/k Belinda, 15-2. There followed a significant partnership between R Forster & J Garrett which saw the total rise to 53 in the 12th when Forster, having survived a chance, (34, 34b 5x4, 1x6) was deceived by a Patrick slower ball & bowled.

This became 57-4 when Moss (1) edged Tom Oliver to w/k Belinda. Another handy partnership between J Garrett & F Garrett-Jowsey took the score to 109 in the 26th when the introduction of Patrick & Finlay saw J Garrett (46, 56b, 5x4) bowled by Patrick, full & straight, 5 down.

6 down two overs later as F Garrett-Jowsey succumbed to the Hatcher yorker, 114-6 in the 28th. At the same score W Forster (0) was also bowled by Patrick & then in the 30th Sewell (5) was lbw to the captain completing an admirable 5 fer for the skipper.

Finlay reverted to spin & enticed R Parker (5) to advance & w/k Belinda to effect the stumping, 9 down & all out. Patrick 5-12 but a good all round performance with good batting partnerships helping to build a defendable total &, although some chances went down, the bowlers were backed up in the field, & most creditable debuts for Will Oliver & Oliver Alexander.

The 1864's rise to 4th spot in Division 1 on 159 points. Onward to Sat 3rd August 1864 v Benwell Hill (a) 1330, 40/40. We hope you can be there to cheer them on.
