1864's won by 48 runs - 20 points, Belsay 6.

Debutants U13 Elliott Mee, Steve & Leo Harper played key roles in an all-round good display on a sunny day at Belsay. The 1864's won the toss & chose to bat. Patrick Hatcher led the side having recovered from a shoulder injury.

Jack Patterson & Belinda Wewalage faced  the seam of Bertram & B Hewitt. At 30 in the 10th Belinda (7) was caught off Tait. Jack was batting nicely, punching through cover off the back foot & in company with Jacques put on 31 for the 2nd wicket but at 62 in the16th Jacques (7) was lbw to Dissanayake.

One run later Jack (38, 57b, 5x4) was caught off Hewitt 3 down, a very nice innings from Jack getting a  score on the board. Finlay Pearce joined Elliott Mee & the pair advanced  the score nicely to 95 when an overoptimistic call for a third run by Finlay led to Elliott (10, 14b, 1x4) being run out, a very promising first innings, 95-4 in the 22nd over.

Another handy partnership between Finlay & Leo Harper took the score to 122 in the 29th when Finlay (41, 41b, 4x4), a fine knock, was bowled by Mills. Patrick (0), aiming to dab, played on to the off spin of Liyanage at 123. Arif Alam (1) was lbw to Liyanage in the 32nd & Tom Oliver (1) bowled by Liyanage in the 34th, 134 -8.

The Harpers to the rescue as Steve joined Leo & the pair advanced the score to 151 in the 37th when Steve (14,12b 2x4) was bowled by Bertram, with one that kept a bit low.

Leo continued with David Cragg & the pair sensibly saw out the 40 overs at 161-9, Leo (18, 47b, 1x4) an important bedrock innings & David (7*), defendable.

Patrick struck in over 1 of Belsay's reply as T Hewitt (0) was lbw, full & straight. 18-2 in the 6th as Liyanage (4) was bowled by the sla of Jacques Graham who had opened the bowling. Brooker had shown his intent, targeting the short leg side boundary but he lost partners regularly.

At 23 in the 7th Jackson (1) was caught at mid off by David Cragg off Tom Oliver (lm) & at 33. In his next, Tom had Tait (0) caught by Arif at deep square leg, 33-4. 61-5 in the 12th as Gray (10) was caught by Elliott at point off Jacques. Brooker's plundering continued as bowlers pitched middle & leg.

82-6 when B Hewitt was bowled by Patrick in the 15th & finally Brooker (69,49b,2x4,7x6) holed out to deep mid wicket where the safe hands of Steve Harper took the catch off Jacques, 92-7.

Elliott bowled his leg breaks nicely & got a reward when a flighted delivery defeated Dissanayake (10) as he advanced to be stumped by Belinda in the 20th over,104-8.

At the same score David Cragg had Davis (2) lbw & in the 23rd bowled Bertram after being hit for 6, 113 all out in 23 overs.

Good intensity in the field, no dropped catches, lots of energy & debutants making a positive impression, just as it should be.

Onward to Sat 27th July 1864 v Humshaugh (h) 40/40, 1330 start, we hope you can be there to cheer the team on.

Duncan.
