1864s continue to struggle for runs and wickets

24th Jun 2019

A match against the joint league leaders, Hexham Leazes, was always going to be difficult. The loss of players to the 2nd XI and an injury withdrawal simply  made the task even harder.

Asked to bat first after losing the toss the 1864s found themselves 11 for 4 in the 6th over. Wickets fell regularly and the 1864s were all out for 94 in the 29th over. Owen Hollins top scored with an invaluable and tenacious 46. Only 3 batsmen reached double figures.

Defending 94 was not going to be easy. So it proved. Hexham reached 36 in the 10th over before losing their first wicket. A partnership of 53 took them within sight of victory. The winning runs were scored in the 24th over. Hexham won by 8 wickets. One wicket each for Matty Jennings and Atul Ramesh.

The next fixture is on 29 June away to joint league leaders Haltwhistle who are proving to be heavy scorers this season. It might be a long day!! The confidence is low.

The intention remains to field an 1864s side made up roughly of half seniors and half juniors. It is senior players that seem to be at a premium. If there are any senior playing members out there willing to help the side occasionally,  please let Dave Harbottle or Stewart Davidson know. Your club needs you!!
