On a cool, Spring Easter Saturday, the 1864's began their new life in NTCL Div 5 Central with an away game against a youthful Tynemouth 3rd X1 boasting 7 younger teenagers. Choosing to bat Alan Roskilly & Jacob McCord faced the right arm seam of Oliver Hiscott & Cameron Donachie.

An opening stand of 45 in 6 overs showed promise but at that score Alan Roskilly (30 23b 4x4 1x6) was bowled by Hiscott & 4 balls Adi Bethanabatla (0) was adjudged lbw. At 51 Hiscott gained another lbw decision against Will Oliver (1).

Noah Rae (rm), with a well disguised slower ball, then had Jacob McCord (21, 25b, 3x4) caught at mid off, Belinda Wewalage (2) very well caught one handed by a diving Adam Blake at cover & two overs later Arif Alam (2) swept to square leg where Cusack took the catch without having to move.!! 69-6 in the 16th over.

There followed a sensible & match defining partnership of 83 between debutant, the left handed Dilanjan Mahaarachchi & captain Patrick Hatcher. Mixing defence with strong driving & pulling fine, the pair advanced the scoring such that at 20 over drinks the total was 93 & at 30 overs had risen to 142.

At 152 in the 32nd over Dilanjan's steadfast innings (25, 66b, 3x4, 104mins) ended attacking but bowled by Rae. Patrick dropped on 48 continued to attack when possible & moved into the 60's with a 6 over long off, accompanied by Will Young.

Opening bowlers Hiscott & Donachie returned and at 194 the partnership of 42 was broken as Will (1) found Gault at point off Donachie. 5 runs later Hiscott ended the innings with two yorkers to bowl Tom Oliver (1) & David Cragg (0) ending with a most creditable 5-24. Noah Rae's 4-17 was equally impressive.

Patrick's outstanding innings 87* (70b, 10x4 2x6, 102 mins) showed what could be achieved abetted by the patient application of Dilanjan.

Lewis Gault & w/k Will Bogg faced the seam of McCord (rm) & Tom Oliver (lm). Gault (0) was unhappy to succumb lbw to McCord in the third over & Bogg (3) was defeated by a full delivery from Oliver, 4-2. This became 12 -3 when Archie Goel (3) was yorked by Tom in the 7th over.

Richard Harland hit two mid wicket boundaries & survived a dropped chance before he skied to mid off to be caught by Patrick, making amends, off McCord, 26-4. Oliver Hiscott hit one nice boundary before he swung & missed to be bowled by David Cragg in the 13th, 40-5.

There followed an interesting 13 overs as the diminutive, but very well organised Ben Harland & the considerable presence of Ian Cusack defied all attempts to dislodge them. Will Young, a probing spell of 6 overs for only 7, was unlucky to see Harland dropped & then a run out chance spurned from the same delivery!

At 57 in the 26th Patrick found a straight, full delivery to breach Cusack's (6) defence, ending a partnership of 17. Tom Oliver returned & at 62 in the 28th Ben Harland's fine innings of 19 ended when he was bowled attacking. He faced 61 balls & was at the crease for 86 minutes, an outstanding effort.

At 63 in the 29th Adam Blake (0) edged David Cragg to Alan Roskilly at first slip,  At 65 in the 30th Adi dropped Alosh Jose at mid on but redeemed himself by throwing down the stumps at the w/k's end to run out Donachie (2), 9 down. The innings closed at 73 when Noah Rae (4) skied Adi Bethanabatla's second delivery on the leg side for Alan Roskilly to move smartly from slip to take the catch. Will Oliver, at point, fielded well throughout.

A comprehensive win but, as ever, things to work on. Grateful thanks to the volunteer umpires Mr Goel & Mr Young & to all those players who stood at square leg on a cool day becoming colder especially for those watching.

The second match in Div 5 Central is on Sat 26th April 2025 against Lions (a) start 1300. We hope you can come along to support the 1864's.
